Hiking holidays & pilgrimages on Benedict Pilgrim's Trail 2025

The Benedict Pilgrim Trail in Austria

The fully developed Benedict Pilgrim Trail is envisioned to enable hiking from Pluscarden (the northernmost Benedictine monastery in Scotland) all the way to Montecassino (the mother abbey and resting place of St. Benedict in Italy). The original Benedict Pilgrim Trail in Austria runs from Passau through Spital am Pyhrn to St. Paul in the Lavant Valley, or vice versa. Since 2011, the trail has been extended for hiking and pilgrimage to Gornji Grad in Slovenia.

In 2009, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the reestablishment of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul in the Lavant Valley, a pilgrimage route was created along the path once traveled by the monks. This trail was named after St. Benedict of Nursia, the patron saint of Europe.

The Benedict Trail is a path of encounters and movement in many respects: culture, art, monasteries, nature, and people. All pilgrims and hikers who travel contemplatively are meant to feel connected with God and with one another. The long-distance hiking trail in Austria offers an opportunity for tranquility and introspection, for experiencing community and hospitality, but also for sensing transformation. Above all, it allows one to become more conscious of the beauty of creation.

In 1990 the OÖ Touristik performed a pioneering work on the sector of organised cycle holidays: the first bookable cycle tour along the Danube including luggage transfer. Already a year later we offered the first group tours. Over the years the offers of the cycle holidays has expanded throughout Europe and are as popular as ever. During the last 30 years we have expanded the portfolio on mountain bike tours, cycle holidays by bike and boat, group tours and hiking holidays as well as winter and wellness holidays. The organisation and handling of international congresses and events meanwhile adds to the successful enterprise sections.
