Day 1 - Individual arrival in Emmersdorf an der Donau
Welcome to the Wachau region! Your holiday begins in idyllic Emmersdorf, a picturesque wine village directly on the Danube. After checking into your room, there will be time for a stroll along the river or through the dreamy alleys with a view of Melk Abbey on the opposite bank.
Tip: Treat yourself to a glass of Grüner Veltliner in one of the local wine taverns – with a view of the Danube in the evening.

Your hiking tour starts with a leisurely stage that has it all: magnificent views, gentle paths and quiet places. From tranquil Emmersdorf, the route goes via Rantenberg with a view of the Danube to the elegant Luberegg Castle. After crossing the river, you will experience the Lion Island and walk along the blooming banks of the Danube to the historic old town of Melk.
Tip: A visit to the world-famous Melk Abbey with its baroque splendour is a must - afterwards an apricot cake in the monastery café tempts you.

Strengthened by a regional breakfast, you hike through the hilly picture-book landscape of the Wachau today. From Melk, the path leads to the Jonaskreuz with a wide view over the Danube valley. In Schönbühel you pass the castle of the same name, and across meadows and forests you reach Aggsbach Dorf.
Tip: Try the famous Wachau apricot dumplings there – fluffy, fruity, homemade.
Example of hotel: Gasthof Kienesberger in AggsteinDay 4 - From Aggsbach Dorf to Mitterarnsdorf approx. 18 km, ascent and descent approx. 800 hm, walking time approx. 7 hours
This stage is a Wachau classic: you climb up to the legendary Aggstein castle ruins, which tower high above the Danube - a place for fairy tales and postcard motifs. The route continues through the quiet Dunkelsteinerwald to the baroque pilgrimage monastery of Maria Langegg. In the afternoon you reach the winegrowing village of Mitterarnsdorf via the Hohen Stein viewpoint and the 'Glauberkreuz'.
Tip: After so much foresight, a glass of emerald in one of the traditional wineries – perhaps with a piece of smoked fish from the Danube.
Example of hotel: Gasthof zur Wachau in MitterarnsdorfDay 5 - From Mitterarnsdorf to Weißenkirchen approx. 11 km, ascent and descent approx. 400 hm, walking time approx. 3.5 hours
A day straight out of a picture book: you take the roller ferry over to Spitz – a stage of the Wachau can hardly begin in a more typical way. From there you hike up to the Red Gate with impressive views, past dry grasslands and rugged rocks. The path leads through the famous vineyards such as Kollmitz and Hochrain to Weißenkirchen.
Tip: Treat yourself to a snack in one of the traditional wine taverns - with smoked meat, farmhouse bread and a glass of Riesling directly from the vineyard.
Example of hotel: Hotel Kirchenwirt in WeißenkirchenDay 6 - From Weißenkirchen to Dürnstein approx. 17 km, ascent and descent approx. 500 m, walking time approx. 6 hours
You start between old wine terraces and hike over the Kanzel - one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Wachau - to the imposing ruins of Dürnstein Castle, which towers over the blue river. The view is just as regal as the history, because Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned here. The path leads down through forest, rocks and vines to the medieval-romantic Dürnstein.
Tip: Enjoy a glass of Riesling with a view of the baroque collegiate church - a worthy end to the day.

The final stage takes you from Dürnstein through the wine-growing landscape around Loiben, Kellerberg and Pfaffenberg. Gentle climbs, rock formations and dry stone walls line the path. The closer you get to Krems, the more noticeable the cultural flair of this wine town becomes.
Tip: Stop off in the historic town centre in the afternoon – for example, at the Kremser Stadtcafé for a slice of Sachertorte – or visit the Krems Art Mile for a gentle end to your hiking trip.

After breakfast, the bus will take you back to Emmersdorf. If you wish, you can extend your stay in Krems or take a leisurely boat trip back along the Danube – an atmospheric farewell to a picture-perfect landscape.
